Senior Singles Travel Itinerary Ideas

Travelling alone, whether it’s through choice or necessity can be a wonderfully rewarding and varied experience – you have the opportunity to do anything and everything you want!

With the whole world to choose from, where do you start?

Do you want to explore your own country, or make a trip across the world? Are you after a luxurious experience or something a bit more active? Are you journeying alone because you want the solo experience, or are you looking to meet more like minded single travellers?

Freebird Club is the world’s most vibrant social travel club for the over 50s. Chat with members of our community, swap travel tips and if you fancy it, visit each other’s hometowns. You can join the club here.

How to holiday solo

It can be very freeing travelling by yourself. Firstly, you need to decide what type of holiday you’d like to take. There are an established set of companies catering to solo travelling, offering a wide variety of choices so the world truly is your oyster.

1. Join the Freebird Club

Without trying to toot our own horn too much, there’s no richer way of getting to know people than by staying with them and letting them guide you through their world, and having them introduce you to the people and places that make their region so unique. Be it a rustic Italian town or a Mid-Western American town you’ll never meet a better guide than a sociable local.

As a social travel club we pride ourselves on being the most vibrant and active in the world. Just take a look at some of our case studies to see how our Freebirds have got on.

2. Active holidays for singles over 50s

There’s so much variety when it comes to being active. You might be a keen cyclist, an avid backpacker or is it a case of anything but sitting on the beach?

Some of the most popular active holidays are walking tours. Guided trekking across some of the most beautiful places in the world is incredibly liberating, and allows you plenty of time to get to know your fellow group.

Other options include cycling tours, which can range from leisurely trips from stop to stop, to more challenging rides through mountains, or yoga and wellness retreats if you feel like you need to connect with yourself, rather than nature.

If you’re more of a water fan, then you could consider a week with other like-minded kayakers, surfers or sailors!

3. City breaks for singles over 50

If you like indulging your cultural side, nourishing your soul with delicious food and drink and taking in varied and exciting architecture and art, then a city break could be for you.

These are a great option if you’re short of time or fancy experiencing multiple places over a longer period without feeling rushed. Every major city has tour groups you can book on to, allowing you to get under-the-skin of a place with the option of meeting fellow-travellers.

You could start by experiencing the elegance and music in Vienna, the historic charm of Edinburgh or the picturesque beauty of Ljubljana.

4. Group Tours for older singles

Many tour companies offer a range of dedicated group-tour options for older singles. These allow you the opportunity to explore a new area of the world, get informed and meet new people.

The best examples of these companies will invite you to a closed facebook group beforehand to allow you to meet your fellow solo travellers and strike a rapport with them so it’s less of an overwhelming experience when you arrive. Popular destinations include tours of Europe, South America and Asia.

5. Coach tours for singles over 50

Tying all of the above together could be done via a Coach Tour. More grounded than a cruise ship, this gives you the opportunity to create close bonds with your group… or someone specific within it.

These tours mix group, walking and sight-seeing tours into one. They’re especially good if you don’t want to have to think about anything and just want to concentrate on meeting new people as the whole itinerary is taken care of and your focus can be on socialising, site-seeing and new experiences!

6. Guided holidays for older singles

Of course if you’re looking for a more personable experience, where you have more control over the itinerary, you could end up visiting a fellow member in Freebird Club. Whether you’re just looking for someone to help you see some fantastic local sites, experience something new or even make a new friend – the Freebird Club has helpful, hospitable hosts all across the globe.

Whatever holiday you decide on next, Freebird club has a great range of hosts and guides available to help you feel welcome and enthused about your next trip abroad. Join the adventure here.
