Favourite Film Inspired Holidays

Every week we host discussions around travel for older explorers with Freebirds from our community, all hailing from different corners of the world. All with a love of social travel.

Last week we discussed with the community what their favourite film inspired holidays are. Imagine frollicking through the fields like the Sound of Music, or flying a small Cessna over a herd of elephants like something Out of Africa.

Here’s how they lined up:

We thought we’d offer a little guide on each of our top 5 choices so that you can recreate your favourite scenes.

1. Salzburg, Austria: The Sound of Music

salzburg

An absolute and clear winner in this week’s poll, it seems we all dream of being Maria! So how does one do Salzburg and the Austrian alps?

Well, to start your journey there’s no better place than Mirabell Palace and Gardens, where the song “Do-Re-Mi” was famously filmed. Stroll through the immaculate gardens and reenact Maria and the children’s dance sequence on the steps and around the fountain. The palace itself offers guided tours, where you can learn about its rich history and connection to the film.

Next, head to Nonnberg Abbey, the real-life convent where Maria lived before joining the von Trapp family. While the abbey’s interior is private, you can still admire its stunning exterior and soak in the spiritual ambience that inspired Maria’s character.

To truly capture the essence of the movie, join a “Sound of Music” tour that will take you to the iconic locations featured in the film. The tour typically includes the Mirabell Gardens, Leopoldskron Palace (the exterior of the von Trapp villa), and the picturesque Lake District, where the boating scene was shot.

While in Salzburg, don’t miss the opportunity to watch a live performance of “The Sound of Music” at the Salzburg Marionette Theater. This unique puppet show brings the story to life in a delightful and maybe slightly comic way.

For a dose of history and culture, explore the Hohensalzburg Fortress, one of the largest mediaeval castles in Europe. From the fortress, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains that will leave you feeling as if you’ve stepped into a real-life fairytale.

In addition to its “Sound of Music” allure, Salzburg boasts a vibrant arts scene, delightful cuisine, and warm hospitality. Embrace the city’s charm, indulge in Austrian delicacies, and take leisurely walks through its picturesque streets to create unforgettable memories of your musical holiday in the enchanting world of “The Sound of Music.”

You can also explore the bustling streets and markets of the city, where you can indulge in the rich culture and traditions of Morocco. Don’t miss the chance to savour traditional Moroccan dishes like tagine in local restaurants.

While in Casablanca, take a moment to appreciate the city’s Art Deco architecture, which adds to its unique charm. You can visit the Mohammed V Square and admire the grand buildings and historical significance of the area.

For a taste of romance and relaxation, head to Ain Diab, the city’s popular beach district. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade, relax on the sandy shores, or indulge in beachside dining with stunning ocean views.

Casablanca offers a mix of history, culture, and romance, making it an ideal destination for film enthusiasts and adventurers alike. You can really create cherished memories in this enchanting city that still carries the magic of “Casablanca” to this day.

3. Jaipur, India: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Nairobi

John Madden’s tale of old souls with new desires acts as a pretty epic endorsement of Jaipur and its colourful way of life. You can begin your adventure by exploring the bustling streets of the Pink City. Here you can take in the splendid architecture, markets, and vibrant colours that make Jaipur a feast for the senses.

The Amer Fort, a majestic fort located on a hilltop is also a must-do, here you can experience the grandeur of Rajasthan’s history and culture. Don’t miss the enchanting sound and light show that brings the fort’s stories to life each night either.

There’s also the City Palace, a stunning palace complex that showcases a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. Explore the courtyards, museums, and gardens that offer a glimpse into India’s regal past.

For a taste of the film’s theme, you can stay at a heritage hotel in Jaipur. These converted palaces and havelis offer a luxurious and authentic experience, just like the Marigold Hotel in the film. Although maybe not as dilapidated.

While in Jaipur, you can take a day trip to the nearby village of Sanganer, known for its traditional block printing and handmade paper industry. Here you’ll witness skilled artisans at work.

Indulge in the flavours of Rajasthan by trying local delicacies like Dal Baati Churma, Ghewar, and Kachori. Visit Chokhi Dhani, a traditional Rajasthani village resort that offers dining experience and folk entertainment.

If you’re looking for something more spiritual you can visit the Birla Mandir, a beautiful marble temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Its serene atmosphere provides a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

4. Nairobi, Kenya: Out of Africa

nairobi

Out of Africa was originally a memoir by Danish author Karen Blixen, detailing her life on a coffee plantation in Kenya during the early 20th century. Next up on the list is a visit to the Nairobi National Park, a unique wildlife reserve located practically inside the city. Experience an exhilarating safari and encounter a variety of African wildlife, including lions, giraffes, rhinos, and more, surreally set against the backdrop of Nairobi’s urban cityscape.

For an authentic African shopping experience, you can head to the Maasai Market. Here you can browse through colourful stalls filled with traditional crafts, jewellery, and fabrics.

To get a taste of Nairobi’s thriving art scene, it’s worth exploring the Nairobi Railway Museum. It displays a fascinating collection of vintage locomotives and carriages, offering a glimpse into the city’s colonial past.

No visit to Nairobi is complete without a visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Here you can witness adorable baby elephants being cared for and fed by dedicated keepers, contributing to the conservation efforts to protect these gentle giants.

There’s also the Giraffe Hotel that featured in the Channel 4 show Amazing Hotels, as one of the world’s most incredible hotels. Here you can be joined by the giraffes for breakfast as they lean into the dining room to be fed and petted from your table.

Nairobi, a city of contrasts, blends the urban and the wild, just like the spirit of “Out of Africa.” Let the allure of this African metropolis capture your heart as you experience the magic of the movie amidst Kenya’s breathtaking landscapes and wildlife.

Don’t miss the Palazzo Conte Federico, known as Palazzo Corleone in the movie, which you can visit for a glimpse of the family’s residence.
